Fra Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle (1531-1595) ruled as Grand Master of the Order of St John between 1582 and 1595. Following the second Chapter General convened in 1588, the statutes of the Order were revised and published with an addendum showing the portraits of all previous Grand Masters. The portraits have been attributed to the French engraver and print publisher Philippe Thomassin (1562-1622). The other engravings, showing scenes from life in the Order of St John, sometimes in an allegorical form, were made from drawings by the Italian artist Giuseppe Cesari (1568-1640), also known as Il Cavalier D'Arpino.
