The historian Gio. Francesco Abela (1582-1655) was Vice-Chancellor of the Order. In 1647 he published his monumental work Della Descrizione di Malta, of which the National Library also owns a manuscript copy. Abela’s work was the first history of Malta and one of the first books published in Malta. More than a century after Abela’s death, his work was edited and amplified by Count Gio. Antonio Ciantar and republished under the title Malta Illustrata.
