The text of the Roman Mass evolved from oral tradition and until the invention of printing, every missal was laboriously written by hand in beautifully illuminated manuscripts, usually by monks. The first printed edition of the Roman Missal was published in Milan in 1474 and is known as the Missale Romanum Mediolani. This missal, printed in 1481, was produced for usage in Rome.
